چکیده

Systems of polynomial equations with coefficients over a field K can be used to concisely model combinatorial problems. In this way, a combinatorial problem is feasible (e.g., a graph is 3colorable, hamiltonian, etc.) if and only if a related system of polynomial equations has a solution over the algebraic closure of the field K. In this paper, we investigate an algorithm aimed at proving combinatorial infeasibility based on the observed low degree of Hilbert’s Nullstellensatz certificates for polynomial systems arising in combinatorics, and based on fast large-scale linearalgebra computations over K. We also describe several mathematical ideas for optimizing our algorithm, such as using alternative forms of the Nullstellensatz for computation, adding carefully constructed polynomials to our system, branching and exploiting symmetry. We report on experiments based on the problem of proving the non-3-colorability of graphs. We successfully solved graph instances with almost two thousand nodes and tens of thousands of edges.

Expressing Combinatorial Optimization Problems by Systems of Polynomial Equations and the Nullstellensatz

Systems of polynomial equations over the complex or real numbers can be used to model combinatorial problems. In this way, a combinatorial problem is feasible (e.g. a graph is 3-colorable, hamiltonian, etc.) if and only if a related system of polynomial equations has a solution. In the first part of this paper, we construct new polynomial encodings for the problems of finding in a graph its lon...

Combinatorial Nullstellensatz

The Combinatorial Nullstellensatz is a theorem about the roots of a polynomial. It is related to Hilbert’s Nullstellensatz. Established in 1996 by Alon et al. [4] and generalized in 1999 by Alon [2], the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz is a powerful tool that allows the use of polynomials to solve problems in number theory and graph theory. This article introduces the Combinatorial Nullstellensat...

Computational Aspects of the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz Method

We discuss here some computational aspects of the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz argument. Our main result shows that the order of magnitude of the symmetry group associated with permutations of the variables in algebraic constraints, determines the performance of algorithms naturally deduced from Alon’s Combinatorial Nullstellensatz arguments. Finally we present a primal-dual polynomial constru...

Gröbner Bases and Nullstellensätze for Graph-Coloring Ideals

We revisit a well-known family of polynomial ideals encoding the problem of graph-kcolorability. Our paper describes how the inherent combinatorial structure of the ideals implies several interesting algebraic properties. Specifically, we provide lower bounds on the difficulty of computing Gröbner bases and Nullstellensatz certificates for the coloring ideals of general graphs. For chordal grap...

Recognizing Graph Theoretic Properties with Polynomial Ideals

Many hard combinatorial problems can be modeled by a system of polynomial equations. N. Alon coined the term polynomial method to describe the use of nonlinear polynomials when solving combinatorial problems. We continue the exploration of the polynomial method and show how the algorithmic theory of polynomial ideals can be used to detect k-colorability, unique Hamiltonicity, and automorphism r...
